G4S partnerships in sport
G4S Kenya sponsors a young athlete, Pauline Korikwiang, the World Cross 5,000m champion, who is also a junior 3,000m silver medallist.
Through the G4S 4teen programme, Pauline has participated in local, national, regional and international championships and is a role model for young Kenyans. With G4S sponsorship and the support of FastTrack, Pauline has kept her athletics training on track and is looking forward to winning more medals and breaking athletics records. Pauline signed her sponsorship with G4S in 2007 as part of the G4S 4Teen Global Project. Other athletes are from Bangladesh, Botswana, Colombia, Chinese Taipei, Estonia, Guatemala, India, Macau, Nigeria, Philippines, South Africa, and Thailand.
Pauline has participated in local and international races since she won the 5,000m junior women’s championship in 2006. In her most recent race, the World Championships qualifiers at Nyayo Stadium, Nairobi, Pauline was fifth in the women’s 5,000m, clocking 15:10:00.
In January 2010, in Fuensalida, Spain, Pauline won the women’s 6.5 km race in 20:05 way ahead of title defender Ines Monteiro of Portugal. A week later, at the fifth leg of IAAF Cross-country Permit series in Santiponce, Spain, Pauline was runner-up after Masai and compatriots Pauline Korikwiang and Ann Karandi Mwangi.
One notable transformation in Pauline is her confidence. As a result of her exposure to local and international training (e.g. one-week training at Peak Performance, Outward Bound camp), Pauline can now engage with ease at any level.
In a previous interview, Pauline had this to say about the sponsorship: “Before I joined G4S 4teen, my days were so different. G4S has given to me more privileges that I can imagine. I have been to so many places and met many wonderful people. G4S is helping me with other areas of my life apart from supporting my running. They changed my school so that I can be closer to where I train and have a better education. They are helping my family by building them a house. They have given me assistance with my nutrition issues, which means I run so much better. They have also made me my first ever birthday cake. I now want to share this and all my experiences with others, like me, who have a dream.”
